I started designing and sewing clothes in the seventh grade when my family and Ilived in a loft apartment in Shorewood, WI. I was good and gained experience. But, it all started my senior summer when i was invited to inter the summer academy in Fashion Design at Cornell University. After taking two classes in design and print making, I walked away with my first official design called "Urban Flower." Later I would wear that design at the Grammy Awards and the Malcolm x Movie Premier Party. Designing to move to the big city lead me to Atlanta's Clark Atlanta University. There I was a fashion design major until I left after the first semester to travel on tour with my group Arrested Development I began my career with the group as their stylest. It was the age of grunge and I single handily came up with the idea of wearing plaid shirts with Jean overalls. The sample for the NIA Jacket (soon to be released) was actually worn by me on Grammy night 1992, when I won two awards including 'Best New Artist'. And gave the acceptance speechs. While in college at Spelman agfter leaving the group, I decided to continue my fashion career by becoming employed at Elizabeth, Dillards, and Lane Bryant retail stores. I have also consulted with my partner eighty-year old quilt maker Aunt Scrub. The daughter of my great-great grandmother Texanna McKenney. Hence the there is an Tex Fund Scholarship at Rust College where proceeds from %10 of the sales of NIA go to it. NIA means purpose in ki-Swahili. And this is a clothing line that has purpose. It is the heartbeat of Asia. Taken from the silhouette of scrubs kimonos it is given a couture style with the textiles and designs. The link to popular Asia Kimono line of clothing is the inspiration for the NIA tag symbol. NIA has and uses the finest materials, and does not use zippers or buckles. NIA is all natural form. The aura of the clothes is Asian withthe inspiration of the Buddhism spirituality. Totally natural totally NIA. Find purpose in your life... Find NIA!
